Update on the Restoration Project
In April 2008 restoration work began on the front (George Street) wall. This phase of the project included re-installation of the east pinnacle, repairs to the rose window and restoration of the stonework. The estimated cost was $227,000. There was just enough money in the Restoration Fund to cover this.
Soon after the masons started their work, they discovered a problem: the interior wall supporting the stone face had deteriorated and shifted and was no longer attached to the outer stonework.
The contractor recommended removing the damaged wall to two feet below the top of the rose window and rebuilding it with concrete block. This was done and the re-installed stonework was anchored to the new wall with stainless steel rods. The cost of this phase increased to over $400,000 and planned work on the bell tower (steeple) was deferred.
In order to meet this increased cost, the congregation met on June 29 and authorized Trustees to borrow the necessary funds. Trustees did this by taking a mortgage on the manse.
The work was completed in November. Now we no longer have to worry about stones falling from the front wall, the small pinnacle is secure and the rose window has been completely restored.
This year, there will be no restoration work done due to depleted resources in the Restoration Fund.
We hope to resume work on the project in Spring 2010. The next phase will involve the east wall (by the George Street parking lot) and the Johnston window in the balcony.
Work on the final phase – west wall along York Street as well as the bell tower – is planned for 2011.
We need your commitment and financial support to continue this work.
