Restoration Campaign Update
Stonework
During the summer, two companies submitted bids to restore all the stonework with repairs to be done over four years as money becomes available. One bid was for $800,000, the other for $400,000. The lower bid, from Masontech Inc. of Halifax, was accepted.
While not readily visible, preliminary work has begun. This preparatory phase is necessary before major reparations can begin next year. In recent weeks, the contractor has been on site to verify the extent of the repairs, determine the type of stone to be used and shore up the foundation around the steps at the front of the church. Over the next few months, stones for the repair work will be measured and cut. The pinnacle, which was removed from the east side of the front doors a few years ago, is also being restored and will be reinstalled next year.
Following discussions with the contractor it was agreed, in writing, that the total contract work scheduled for 2007 and 2008 (front and east side) would be completed by October 31, 2008.
Windows
Another part of the restoration project involves our beautiful stained glass windows. During the summer, a detailed inventory of all the windows was compiled - glass and windows measured, recorded and photographed. Three windows were recently repaired: the Watson window and another on the York Street side as well as the Skene window which faces the George Street parking lot. Unbreakable Lexan glass has been installed on the outside to protect them.
